How to Dress when Approaching 40

Ok so this might not be a problem for every woman, however I am finding as I approach 40 I can not pull off the styles that I am drawn to anymore.  I love, love, love, me some boho styles that I seem to continuously pin on Pinterest but when I go to create replicas I find I look like I am in a costume.
Is there something that happens somewhere between 35 and 39? Or maybe it's just where I am finding myself at this time.  I am almost 40 and am only now approaching a career where I have to present myself in a professional way.  This is what trips me up.  How do you turn a bohemian hippie type style into one that is appropriate without going so over the edge that I end up looking like Professor Sybil Trelawney (Emma Thomson's character in Harry Potter).
I have Googled, Pinterested, and attacked my own closet but, alas, I have not found an appropriate compromise to blending boho and professional.  If you by chance read this and have some ideas please hit me up:-)

Etsy:-)!!!

Ok so this has been a long process full of procrastination, doubt, and insecurity.  However, I have left that all by the wayside and have opened my Etsy store.  It is small but it is all mine lol!
Right now I have 4 half aprons and one full apron for sale (including the flour sack one:-) but I will be adding weekly since I have many projects started.  Maybe this will give me the extra incentive to finish them.  I still connect to the simpler times and love making aprons so that is what I have posted.  In the project basket I have some fun purses in the works including a cool envelope clutch.
I think my grandma would be proud of this endeavor.  I am making things that I enjoy, that are functional, and that remind me of her.

Check it Out!!!

Flour Sack Redo

A couple of days ago I wrote about my visit home and how my grandma inspired me to try and use what I have in front of me to create something new.  In other words to be resourceful!
On this last visit home I enjoyed walking through an antique mall with my mom and my sister.  While walking through the various vignettes I fell in love with vintage flour sacks.  I loved both the pictorial advertising as well as the material.  They reminded me of that simpler time I referred to in earlier posts.  I wasn't quite sure what I would do with them but I had to have them none-the-less.  I ended up buying only two in the hopes that I would just find more when I was inspired.
When I came home I was convinced I was going to turn both sacks into pillows however the more I thought about it, it just did not feel right.  Since I enjoy making aprons anyway I decided to see what I can come up with from this flour sack.  After a little time here is what I came up with.
The only other fabric I used was a simple muslin for the waist band and the straps.  I made this one using just one flour sack and less than a 1/4 yard of muslin.  Now if I can rethink something like this I know you can too!!
Here's a before and after!  If you are not a sewer just check out my FaceBook page and I can ship one to you:-)

"Make it Work!"

In general I feel like I walk a couple steps behind the "crowd."  I am a very last minute kind of gal. I do not intend to be.  I actually start off with amazing intentions!  I think about them and even walk through plans in my mind but for some reason I fail to act upon it until the eleventh hour.  So why would today be any different lol.
You see tomorrow I am going to the wedding of my dear friend's son.  I have known about this since early spring but have always figured I had time to go shopping.  I am sure you can already see where this is going and you would be right.  As of this morning I had nothing, no clothing to wear and no gift to give.  While the kids were trying on clothes I looked over their registry.
They had many of the necessities for setting up a proper home but what really drew my eye were all of the baking supplies they had on there.  So I picked through their list and bought some items that would be needed to do any baking.  Unto this I added an apron:-)
Now from my last post you can see that I LOVE color and pattern (just look at the fabric wall:-) However this couple LOVES neutrals.  So I had to "Make it Work."

Ok so it is not totally neutral but I think it is tame enough for those afraid of too much color.  I used a muslin to tone down the ruffles and waist band and found fabrics in my stash that sported a brown/mocha.
I am hoping this addition to the baking supplies will make for a lovely gift!

New Inspiration and Space!!

So if you take a look at the time lapse between my fist couple of posts and now you will see it's been a while.  I must apologize about this but I think it was a good thing to step back.  It has given me time to develop a little more vision, though be warned I reinvent frequently (lol)!
I have been very busy moving and traveling across the U.S. with my family.  During this time I have been inspired like never before.  In Hawaii I was first inspired by the beauty and colors there that were echoed in the fabrics I found. It was the first place where I took an idea and kind of "jogged" with it.
Well now I have been inspired again by my visit back home.  While I was there I thought a lot about my grandma, the way she reused things and how she worked on refining the art of homemaking.  She was the one who taught me how to sew, how to re-do and reupholster furniture, and how to be resourceful with what you have in front of you.
In my new house I lost my sewing loft and craft room.  The kids kind of took over here but that's OK they are definitely worth loosing my space to.  So no craft room, what's a girl to do???
After much walking around the house trying to find a corner, closet, or any space to call my own it dawned on me... The Kitchen Is My Space!  For better or worse let's face it that's where I end up cooking, visiting with friends, cleaning, "yadda, yadda, yadda" so why not add sewing/crafting to that list.
The way my kitchen is set up I knew my stuff was going to be out in the open so I had to come up with a solution that LOOKED good. I could not handle the thought of plastic drawers and a wall of cabinets closing the room in.  So here it is...

It still makes me smile when I look at it:-)  I love the patterns and colors on the fabrics I choose so much why not use them to throw some color on the wall. This was very low cost since we used old curtain rods my hubby was going to throw away thinking we didn't need them anymore.  We added some curtain clips and voila instant art!
On my desk I used a kitchen two tiered fruit basket to hold my beading supplies. The beads are in the jars on the shelf over the fabric.   I have my paint brushes in jars and my acrylic paints are in the desk drawer.  My sketch pad and scrapbook papers are in a wooden letter organizer (something else we were going to throw away) on the shelf unit. I store my sewing machine under my desk when not in use so I have a nice work space.  When I cut my material or just need more surface space to work on I have a long folding table I bring in.

Any odds and ends like projects in the works, or fabric scraps go into a basket that I keep in my closet though it would fit nicely under the fabric wall.
So here you go with the help of the memory of my grandma, some Pinterest, and imagination I have turned my kitchen into a decorative crafting and cooking hub.
   Let the Inspiration Begin!!!!!

Ugh!!!

Does anyone else out there find their lives so busy they can't tell which way they're going??? Of course you do and that is exactly how I have been feeling this past couple days.  I am currently in school and am trying to get this little business off the ground. I have been trying to be responsible in finishing my school projects before I sit at my machine but they are consuming me!!! I know it is only a season but I would much rather have a short spring season rather than this long winter one lol!  I am looking forward to this coming 3 day weekend in which I plan to finish some orders and if possible start some just for fun projects that I have seen on "Pinterest."  I will post how those turn out:-)  Til next time...Be Blessed!!!

Welcome

So I have started this blog to capture the beginnings of my small business.  I started out by making things for my friends who then posted pictures of the stuff on FB.  Next thing you know I have people asking if they could order. Who am I to say no:-)  So that is how Mellyz Threadz came into existence.  Now begins the joys of juggling motherhood, a Masters Program, music (I play and sing at church and wherever else I can:-) and seeing if I can grow this hobby into something more.  So here I go.....
